Class Pet

Okay. A kindergarten teacher at my sister's school has some fish in her classroom. And also this rat.

I'm sorry, did you think that was a typo?

Again. Also this RAT.

The first time I saw it, it freaked me the heck out. It's gross. Oh, and her plan is to let the rat roam around the classroom during the day. Just run around, like any ordinary pet. Except this is no ordinary pet. This isn't a puppy or a kitten.

It's a RAT. I cannot wrap my head around this.

That's like something most teachers would want to avoid, having a rat running around. Besides being disgusting, isn't that also a little distracting? Aren't five-year-olds going to be, uh, a little aprehensive about this. This isn't Fievel. It's a sewer rat! And as my coworker pointed out, didn't rats cause, like, the bubonic plague? See below.

Ick, ick, ick. No, no, no. Animated rats? OK. Real live rats wandering the classroom? Again, I say "No, no, no! Ick!"

Little suckers bite, too. The snake in the glass cage in the 6th grade was bad enough. Ew, ew, ew!

OH MY GOD. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. We're not allowed to have animals of any kind at our school (something I don't complain about)for health/sanitary reasons. I'm disgusted. Absolutely disgusted.

I picture LBG going in there one night and somehow making that rat disappear---never to be seen again!

roaming around the classroom.....if the teacher thinks that is a pet, I would have to question her judgement.

If anyone needs a rat for a pet, I know where you can get one. Real cheap.

Seriously. You need to post something new. I shudder every time I click on your blog now.

I wouldn't want my kid in that class!

When I was in the second grade a fellow student brought in her boa constrictor for us to watch it eat live mice. I said that I couldn't handle it so that I could go on the playground instead. I could tell my teacher doubted me, because I was never a good liar, because I really don't think that it would have bothered me. The issue I had is that I thought it was inappropriate for them to make us watch it.

That is disgusting. My next venture would be getting a class cat. Preferably a hungry one.
